The use of lighting in combination with camera techniques is
paramount in the creation of tone and atmosphere in film. On their own the
various types of lighting can be used each for their own means, key light draws
attention to specific parts of the shot and depending on if the light is high
or low key can also help change the atmosphere and implications of a scene.
Practical lighting help present realism and is usually the main if not only
light type uses in realist films. Backlighting creates a silhouette effect when
used on its on without key or fill lights. The postion of the camera greatly effects how light comes across, for example light would appear differently if shot from a mid shot than if it were shot from a wide angle. A main use of lighting is to tell the audience where in the shot to look as lighting can draw their attention to specific people or points in the shot creating a visual prompt to steer the audience through the scene
