editing evaluation
My editiing skills evolved this year, back in september i possesed basic editing skills but these quickly developed thanks the my 4 hour film challenges.
My edit of the door was my first major development in editing, here i learned more about creating continuity by matching up shots of different rooms to make it seem like things were connected and the movement from one room to another was seemless. this film is where i put to use my only notible vido editing skill i knew prior to september which was using colours to help create a mood, my edit of the door used a cold blue colour tome to help envoke the hostility and unfriendlyness of the place which set it apart from my teams edits.here i also learned about layering visual effects and filters, this was the first time i modified the frame rate of footage to create an effect which is somthing i'd later do i most of my other films. At one point i encounterd a digital rendering problem which caused my effects to be distorted, after speaking with the tecnichian i learned to modify my premier settings to fit the device i was using and prevent these issues.
the next growth in my editing came in my silent film edit, once again i edited the frame rate and added filters to make the footage look like footage frim the silent era, this practise allowed me to improve the skills i learned in the previous edit. Another method i used to help achive the silent film effect was speeding up the footage to emulate how the projectects would play the old film quickly and make it look like everything was moving quickly. this film was also my first attempt at split screen which is somthing id later dedicate a whole film to, my attempt in this edit was flawed but i was able to mask issues such as lighting and satuartion using the grey scale and filters.
unusual perspective was a culmination of all my visual techniques, here i was again edited the frame rate and added multiple filters, in this film i played about with lighting and angles and marked the return of my skills at colour correction the change the tone greatly, this film was one i presented to my assessor for my uni application where it recived the comment of being very sam raimi.
multi me was my final 4 hour film challenge and whilst it is definetly one of the least polished of my films it accomplished its goal of helping me perfect the split screen effect. here i did split screen at both close up and far back with 3 of me in the same shot, the shadows were difficult particulaly in the close ups so i understood the importace of fill lights to prevent that. i also developed my colour correction skills here as instead of simply changing a mood i had to modify two existing tones to match each other which proved tricky when the light would cause the vibrance to change mid shot.
the skills i learned this year were used when making my film studdies film but a new editing skill that i had to learn for this film was audio editing, i was aiming for better audio quality with this film and mostly achieved it though a couple shots still suffer badly from it, here i changed the levels of volume whilst keeping sound floor low.
my editing skills evolved greatly this year and i learned various usefull skills which i would later go on to imprive throughout the year

Questionaire
It is important i do questionaire as it is a key part of research that will allow me to better understand my audience and know how to construct my music video in a way that targets them. This will help me optimise my video by learning the targets prefrences as well as what type of music video would be most effective for the chosejn music.
Questionaire distribution
My video will more be aimed at youg people so in order to get results from that group of people i will have to share it in online communities such as discord or twitter rather than somewhere like facebook where more old people are. By posting my questionaire in a place where the majority of users are within the age range it will increase my chances of gaining usefull information from my questionare by increasing the likleyhood that the answers will come from my taregt audience whuch will help me target them and decreasing the likleyhood of results from people outside my target group meaning more of the information will be useful.
Question 1. Do you like/watch music videos?
answers
1.yes i watch them regularly
2. yes i watch them sometimes
3. no i rarely if ever watch music videos
i asked this first question in order to understand the participents views on music videos which will help me determine how useful their answers are in relation to this topic, for example if the findings have mixed results i can subtract the answers of those who do not like music videos to ensure the results i use are as accurate to the intended demographic as possible
From these results we can see that out of the 20 people asked 15 of them like music videos and we can further narrow to down to 4 of them who regulaly watch music vidoe's, this information tells me that 75% of the participants like music videos so will be able to provide usefull information for my research
question 2. how old are you
1. 14 or below
2. 15-18
3. 19-22
4. 23-27
5. 28+
this question is important and a variation of it appears in most questionaires. it's important to determine if the information is coming from the intended domographic
From these results we see that 85% of participants are in the target age range, we can then cross reference this with the information from question 1 we learn that 70% of the participents are both fans of music videos and in the targeted age range which will be usefull when analysing the answers from the other questions
question 3 what about music videos appeals to you
this is an open question i asked in order to learn why the participants like music videos, it's important to iclude both open and closed questions as stated in my research methods analysis, i speciically was interested in how people find enjoyment in music videos and how i could link that to the codes and conventions of music videos. i also gave participents the option to skip this question if they answered 3 for question 1
upon reading through the results i found i'd recievd 17 with 2 being from those who didn't like music videos, both these people explained they thought music was more of an audio medium and didn't need a acomniying visual, this shows me that perserving the music itself is important, the main majortiy of the particpents explained they liked how music vidoe's add stories and images to a song which makes it feel more fleshed out whilst around 4 people cited how the video enhances the audio as what drew them to music videos. from this i know that the visuals should have some connection to the audio in order to be sucessful otherwise it could lose the themes of the original song which could also disconnect fans of that genre
question 4. what type of music video do you prefer
!. narrative
2. performance
3. conceptual
this question was to act in a pair with question 3 and help me narrow down the prefrences of the particpants when cross refrencing with question 3.
from these results we see 70% of the paricpants prefer narrative, looking at this together with the results of question 3 we see thatthe majority of participants prefer narrative videos as they expand the song into more of a 3d story and gives it more meaning that audio alone and enhance the pre existing meaning from the song by using the narrative to augment the meanings whilst using edits and shot choices to augment the tone
Evaluation
My questionaire task proved interestiing as it required me to carefully think of my questions and how i would make questions that would give me information that would actually be usefull in making my video. From these questions i learned that a narrative video would be the best and would work best if it enhances whats already in the music. By designining questions that specifically determined the participents prefrences i was able to ensure the information aquired was as useful as possible, i aslo did my best to eliminate bias by including multiple options in my closed questions though i could have taken this further with the use of more open questions.
if i were to do this again i woul make sure to include more open questions as the one i did include gave interesting results that were important in shaping my video. i would also add questions that specifically relate to the demographic, not doing this was a result of the creative issues on the development side and the late decision in what song and genre to use but if i had had that decied in time then i could have made questions specific to the genre and provided some other music videos of similar songs for particpants to give feedback on so that i could see what was well recieved in those video's and adapt those things into my own video for exaple if a specific style of editing was prefered or if a video used visuals to portray a message

evaluation music video
music video was a difficult unit for me to tackle
my planning was near non existent aside from a few rough shots i had in my mind, thi s was because i was unable to lock in my idea and the video completely changed multiple times during production. in the end the video i made was not from planning but in the moment raw creativity. i would say i understand how to create a music video from my reasearch and analysis of other videos and the theories of goodwin and vernalis. the final video itself turned out well and manged to match the beat and tone of the song though i would have liked to do more shots and perhaps try some effect work.
research
when researching the videos and theories i belive it was satisfactory though i could have done more on the analysis side as well as went into vernalis theory more,
there was a lack of focus group and questionarie results

music videos analysis and theories
Goodwin's theory is based around the idea that music videos should create a link between the music and the visuals
Goodwin explains that this can be done in multiple ways through different styles, firstly there's the different types of links that can be made between the visuals and the music, the most common of these is for the visuals to match what the lyrics of the song are about though this can also be done by having them match the songs tone for example if the songs lyrics are about positive things or feelings then the video may use bright and colourful visuals similarly if the lyrics are focused on sad emotions the visuals would be dark and gloomy to match. as stated earlier this can also be applied to the songs rhythem and tone in addition to the lyrics, for example if the song has a quick beat then the visuals should be quick moving usually involving multiple quick takes whereas a song with a slower ryhthem would use fewer takes but each one used would drawn out and slow paced to match the beat. aditionally there is opositinal links which is esstenitally having the visuals oppose the music rather than match it. finally the visuals can also be linked to the music through a method called amplification which uses the visuals to add more meaning to what can be heard, music can be amplified by showing the band playing it and a narrative can be shown alongside the lyrics to give them more meaning and thus impact
different types of videos can be narrative (portraying a story) performance (showing the song being preformed in a way) or conceptual (uses related visuals in a way that isnt the other two)
vernalisis theory is based around 4 key concepts which are used in the making of a music video which are
narrative
editing
camera movement
diegesis
the music video for under pressure is what would fall into the abstract catagory of music videos, at a glance this videos visual have next to no relation to the song, there is no aspect of a proformance or even a narrative in this video. the visuals of this video link heavily to the message of the song, the lyrics of the song are about mental health more specifically how it's a wide issue that is effecting thousands everyday yet nobody talks about it. the video is entirely made up of stock footage shich is used to cenvey the songs themes, the video features various crowds of people to represent the mass public and intercuts them with quick cuts of black and white footage which includes the horror film nosfaratu, these cuts represent the inner human mind and the spiratic nature of them show how the human mind can be, the footage of distrcuction being played also enforces the songs message that thousands of people are suffering from distructive mental health issues. this video visualises mental health and through its footage portrays the message that we are not all alone which makes the video successful as that is the message of the song itself
This is an example of a narrative music video that creates a narrative in releation to the song and uses that as the focus of the video, these kind of videos use the narrative to visualise meaning in places that the lyrics and music wouldn't have originally done. whats unique about this video is it is both a live action and animated video which the narritive uses to its advantage to create a sense of fantasy. the plot focuses on a lonley woman who is focused on the fantasy world of her comic to the point that she ends up living in that world litterally, she falls in love with the comics protaganist and eventually brings him back to the real world with her. this narrative contains themes of love and escapism so by using it the video will link these themes to the song and create an accosiation, the songs lyrics themselves are about being sad but learning life is ok and being happy again so the narrative of somone trying to escape into fantasty only to come back to reality and be happy fits with this theme. the video also enhances the music and lyrics through performance aspects, band appears in the comic world and also swithces between live action and animation just like the characters and the male lead is singing the lyrics of song which creates a greater tie between the video and song as if the character has specically made it for the woman in the video. fianally the animated style being blended with reality makes this video visually appealing which helps capture the attentyion of the viewers and helps the video stand out from others and be memorable
this video mainly focuses on the performance type of music video. the lyrics of the song focus on love and commitment, so in the video the singer mainly looks directly into the camera in order to build a connection between us and the signer by casuing the audience to make eye contact with him, the bright and vibrant visuals envoke the tone of the song. this video is edited so that it seems like the singer is seemlessly singing the song from shot to shot despite location and outfit changes, this editing would have required the singer to lipsync the full song multiple times from different angels and locations but the editing here makes them blend seamlously
this video is a great example of a performance video that uses the footage to enhance the music. the lights and camera movement are matched to the beat of the song with quick movments for the fast paced lyrics, this is a prime example of goodwins theory in practise. the way the lights flicker in tune with the beat is a great way to amplify the music and im a fan of how each instrument has its own lighting pattern

evaluation of research techniques
questionaires: a questionaires effectiveness varies depending on the structure of the question it is important to not soley rely on closed questions where the person filling it out only needs to select one of multiple preprepared answers usually giving the options of yes or no, closed questions limit the variety of the answers and in some ways can bring in bias if the avalible answers are one that only align with certain viewpoints. alternitivly open questions also include thier own set of issues as allowing the answers to be to open ended the it leaves a possibility of gaining no usefull information from the results. in order to make a successfull questionarie it's required to include a variety of both open and closed questions, the closed questions should also vary from being yes/no base or other choice based. in order to make sure the information is useful and to ensure your answers come fromt the right demographic you should also include optional questions that are only to be answerd depending on responses to previous questions for example if your video is aimed at a rock genre then answers regarding the videos format will only be useful if they are from fans of said genre otherwise fans of other genres could influence your results and your video could end up with codes and conventions of another genres demographic.
focus groups: focus groups are different from questionaires as they allow for even more open imput that wouldn't be possible from predetermined questions. a focus group can offer more detailed opinions and can be used for assessing a early version of a video. foucus groups also benefit from the fact they are a group so by allowing group discussuion it allows more detailed feedback than a questionaire could and it would allow participents to share thoughts and ideas and develop them more before feeding them back. a focus group comes later in the development cstage and should be made up of the target demographic.
